I just got back from the gym...I wonder if I lost a pound seeing that I feasted away this past weekend. How do I get my kids(students) to do their homework assignments -especially if they are related to the following day's lesson?Anyone with better luck?I get so frustrated sometimes when I spend so much time explaining to my kids the direction our writing classes are taking and so I need them to hold their end of the bargain. What do I get in return-excuse after excuse. Can I bring it tomorrow with a note from my mother? Yes dear,I reply .The following day-nothing!

That's totally normal -- mine did the same thing. What are they writing about? Is the topic something they are invested in? (I know, at least for me, the genre was determined by our grade-level standards, etc).
I've found that some kids will always bring their homework and some kids will never bring their homework... I incorporate homework into my reward system... They get a ticket for bringing in homework... That ticket can be traded in for a reward... On Thursday, one of my students who never does his homework turned it in... I made such a big deal about it... The whole class gave him a hand... He had he biggest smile on his face... I told him I was proud of him.. and the next day I got homework again...
I deal with the same issues among my students...you're not alone! Unfortunately I dont know the answer, but to try and stay calm so it doesn't effect your life negatively...easier said than done I know, but its worth a try!
Homework is a touchy subject. I have a reward system for homework. On Friday, I give candy to the students who completed all of their assignments that week. At the end of the month we have a raffle with the students who completed their homework that month. At the end of the marking period they get candy, a prize from the prize box and a certificate in their report card. Most students want to be rewarded. I tell them that after 3 zeroes for homework that I will call their parents and I also write progress reports. Some students always fall into this category. I'm not giving up on them. I'll keep trying.
Well i am using the ticket method like rashonda but it worked for some kids but most still did not do their homework. Last week i bribed my students with pizza if they did all their homework and earned a 70 or higher on all the assignments. Well that worked. I had many more studnets completing HW that week. Im not buying pizza every week but i proved to them that they can do it. We are celebrating tomorrow and only 7 students out of 25 earned the pizza. More actually earned it but i had to take it away b/c of extreme behavior. I felt bad but their behavior was unacceptable!!
